6 Picturesque Spots in and Around Tacoma, WA
Tacoma, WA, and its outskirts is a city full of postcard-style scenery. Within a short drive, you can find yourself walking and breathing the best the Pacific Northwest has to offer. If you find yourself in the mood for a nice, easygoing day trip, here’s a few places you need to check out.
Point Defiance Park
Point Defiance Park is the undeniable gem of Tacoma. It features numerous picture-taking opportunities throughout its confines. Upon entering the park, you’ll find most of the great stuff that is Tacoma. This includes the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium, the Rose Garden, and Rhododendron Garden. Depending on what time of year, this pristine park provides great photo opportunities for the amateur photographer.
Okanogan National Forest
Located just a short drive from Tacoma, the Okanogan National Forest is one of the best places to grab a few shots of majestic scenery, especially for the avid outdoorsman. The forest features tons of mountains and forests for your viewing pleasure, so it’s only natural that your inner Ansel Adams should come alive.
Cheney Stadium
OK, so it isn’t the most beautiful sight near Tacoma, but it does give you the upper hand on seeing the next great talent in the major leagues. Home to the Tacoma Rainiers, the stadium does its best to give an old-school vibe to America’s pastime. Plus, there’s nothing better than taking a few selfies while you’re chowing down on some hot dogs and drinking a few beers.
Fort Steilacoom Park
This park just south of Tacoma provides opportunities for a number of pictures. It was originally a missionary post for religious people bringing Christianity to Native Americans, but ended in a brutal massacre. Although it was founded on the best of intentions and then the worst of circumstances, the park has great picture opportunities for a nice barbecue, a softball game, or any other recreational activity. No matter what you’re doing, it’s a great place to take some selfies with you and your friends.
Seattle
It’s a futile effort not to mention the great city just north of Tacoma. Perched on the splendid Puget Sound, Seattle offers so many photography opportunities that it’ll make your head spin. From the Space Needle to a giant pink elephant that graces the marquee of a car wash, Seattle is utterly beautiful. There’s no doubt that you’ll find the perfect place to snap a few photos.
Olympia
Just a 40-minute drive from Tacoma lies Olympia, the capital of Washington. Even if you aren’t a political person, the capitol building still boasts magnificent Romanesque columns and facades. In addition, the city has numerous parks and outdoor activities perfect for a few pictures. You won’t do yourself any disservice by visiting this small, yet photographic city.
It’s definitely hard to nail down just a few spots in Washington to take a few pictures, as the entire state is absolutely amazing. However, if you’re just starting your photographic journey, there’s no better place than the Mecca of the Northwest. At the least, just drive around town. You’ll find what you’re looking for.
