With major national parks such as Mount Rainier and Okanogan-Wenatchee within easy driving distance of Seattle and the rest of the Puget Sound communities, the hiking trails near Sumner are some of the best in the United States. Whether you want an easy walk along the shores of the Sound or a bracing hike through mountain trails, you won’t have far to go.
Sumner Link Trail
The Sumner Link Trail is an easy trail that crosses the length of Sumner from north to south by following the White River. The trail offers plenty of great sights, including Sumner’s downtown area. As the name suggests, it links the Interurban Trail and Lakeland Hills Trail in the north to the Puyallup River Walk and Foothills Trail in the south. It’s easy enough to find parking and amenities at any point along the trail’s length. Plus, if you live in Sumner, you may be within walking distance already.
Foothills Trail
The Foothills Trail starts just south of Sumner and travels 25 miles over an old railroad bed, dipping south to Orting and then back north to South Prairie. After that, the trail splits into two mostly undeveloped gravel roads. While one trail heads northeast to Buckley, the other heads south to Wilkeson and Carbonado. You can find trailheads in all the towns along the developed part of the trail, with parking spaces and restrooms, and there’s a picnic area halfway between Orting and South Prairie. Between its length and its undeveloped section, the Foothills Trail is more for intermediate hikers.
Interurban Trail
As the name suggests, the Interurban Trail connects several of the towns south of Seattle by following another old rail line. The trail starts just north of Sumner in Pacific, and from there, it heads almost directly north for 14.7 miles to Fort Dent Park in Tukwila. From there, trails continue north into Seattle, and the North Interurban Trail travels 18.8 miles from Everett to Edmonds. The hiking is easy on both halves of the trail, and bicyclists often use them for commuting.
Wonderland Trail
There are so many trails in Mount Rainier National Park that they could fill out a list and then some. The trails range in difficulty from very easy to very difficult, but just to give an example, consider the Wonderland Trail. The trailhead is just north of the White River and west of Mather Memorial Parkway. By following Sunrise Road or Sourdough Ridge Trail west until you reach Wonderland Trail, you’ll pass between several mountains and eventually reach Mystic Lake, a calm, clear lake that reflects the magnificent mountains surrounding it.
Hiking and biking trails can take you just about anywhere you want to go in Sumner, whether it’s to a nearby job, to a beautiful view of a nearby river, or to the incredible mountain valleys of Mount Rainier National Park. Winter may close many of these trails throughout much of the year, but for the rest of the trails and the rest of the year, they’re excellent excuses to get outside and enjoy nature.
