Get Some Fun in the Sun | Four Outdoor Activities in Tacoma

As summer draws to a close and autumn approaches, take advantage of the warm weather while it’s still around by heading outside. There are several local parks and outdoor activities are within an hour’s drive from Sumner, but we thin these four places offer a mix of relaxing fun and adrenaline-fueled adventure.

Five Mile Drive & Trails

Head over to Five Mile Drive on N. Pearl Street in Tacoma to walk, hike, or run along five different hiking trails. The trails offer magnificent views of Puget Sound, the Olympic mountain range, Vashon Island, and more. Choose from hikes on the Rhododendron Garden Loop of about half a mile to the longer Square Trail measuring 4.6 miles. Additional secondary trails measuring 4 miles are also open for visitors.

Brown Point Lighthouse Park

Measuring just over 4-acres, the Brown Point Lighthouse Park in Tacoma on Tulalip Street N.E. sits on Brown Point. Its proximity to the water and green space offers lovers of the outdoors the chance to sunbathe, wade into the water, or picnic while watching the large ships heading into Tacoma’s port. Visitors may also choose to attend an available tour on Saturday afternoons of the History Center, Boathouse, and Light Keeper’s Cottage.

Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium

Animal lovers will enjoy a day spent at the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium on N. Pearl Street in Tacoma. Eight different areas house animals of all shapes and sizes, from sea otters and tufted puffins to red wolves and jellyfish. Visit the Asian Forest Sanctuary to check out the big cats or check out the Kids’ Zone where visitors can view animals up close. For the more adventurous, check out the Deep Forest Challenge courses and the zip line.

Dock Street Marina

The appropriately named Dock Street Marina on Dock Street in Tacoma offers entertainment for both thrill seekers and foodies. Kayak rentals are available, letting visitors choose from single or double kayaks. Stand up paddle boats can also be rented. Those who would prefer to stay on dry land will enjoy sampling the menus at twelve local restaurants near the marina.
