2019 Honda Odyssey Tops IIHS Ratings for Passenger-Side Small Overlap and LATCH Testing

Buyers searching for a new minivan that’s safe for the whole family should keep the 2019 Honda Odyssey at the top of their lists. The 2019 Odyssey tops ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in two significant tests for 2018-2019 minivans. Plus, the 2019 Odyssey qualifies as a 2018 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK when equipped with available Honda Sensing and LED headlights.

“Minivan buyers list safety as one of their greatest purchase considerations, and the Odyssey continues to be a top performer in independent safety ratings, further distancing itself from segment competitors,” said Ray Mikiciuk, assistant vice president of Honda Automobile Sales. “If you’re in the market for a minivan and you care about safety, there is simply no better choice than the Honda Odyssey.”

Honda Odyssey Small Overlap Front Crash Test Rating

The IIHS rated 2018-2019 minivans in multiple different tests. The 2019 Honda Odyssey was the only minivan to achieve a “GOOD” rating for the Small Overlap Front Crash tests on both the driver and passenger sides of the vehicle. A small overlap crash is defined as the front corner of the vehicle striking another vehicle or object.

Honda Odyssey LATCH System Rating

The 2019 Honda Odyssey also topped the IIHS’s testing of Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) with a “GOOD+” rating. No other minivan in the IIHS’s tests received above an “ACCEPTABLE” rating in this category. The LATCH system is intended to make the installation of child restraints simpler and easier. The IIHS’s ratings consider ease-of-use criteria that can minimize mistakes in the installation of child restraints using the LATCH system. The 2019 Odyssey’s “GOOD+” rating shows that it exceeded the “GOOD” rating with additional seating positions and easy-to-use hardware, offering three LATCH-equipped seating positions in the second row, and two in the third row.

Honda Sensing on the 2019 Honda Odyssey

When equipped with Honda Sensing and LED headlights, the 2019 Honda Odyssey qualifies as a 2018 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK. Honda Sensing is a suite of safety and driver-assistive technologies that includes Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS)¹, Road Departure Mitigation System (RDM)², Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)³, and Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS)⁴. Honda Sensing is available on the Odyssey LX trim and standard on EX trims and above.
