Honda Releases Special Sonic Civic at Comic-Con
Twenty-five years ago, Sonic the Hedgehog became the mascot of Sega and made the company a serious competitor to Nintendo. The game emphasized constant speed and fluid motion. Accordingly, its colorful design and great soundtrack made it an instant hit that led to a massive franchise of games, comics, and cartoon shows, not to mention a legacy that lives on to this day.
In 2016, Honda marked the momentous anniversary by creating the Sonic Civic and bringing it to the Comic-Con in San Diego. Here’s what makes this model unique:
Custom Wheels
The extra-wide custom wheels come in two different colors to commemorate two distinctive things. First, the two front wheels are bright yellow and gold, a reference to the rings you collect in Sonic to get points and to protect the main character from damage. Second, the two rear wheels are white and red, a reference to the colors of Sonic’s shoes.
Custom Exterior
On top of a Sonic Blue paint job, the exterior of the Sonic Civic comes with a full-length vinyl that shows Sonic both up close and from a distance as he races towards some rings. The vehicle also features Sonic Yellow trim, including a Sonic Yellow Honda logo, and a Sonic Black grille.
Custom Interior
Not only can you find plenty of Sonic on the outside, the interior of the Sonic Civic features blue and white Katzkin leather seats with red highlights. The color scheme perfectly matches that of the titular hedgehog, and drivers of the Sonic Civic will want to fulfill Sonic’s famous catchphrase: “Gotta go fast!”
A Tricked-out Trunk
In addition to the custom colors, the Sonic Civic also comes with a few changes to the trunk. Instead of the usual 15.2 cubic feet of storage space, the Sonic Edition comes with a Rockford Fosgate A/V system, featuring two 500-watt subwoofers, two 400-watt amps, and a flip-up, 32-inch television screen that can play Sonic fans’ favorite video game series.
The Reason for It All
Sonic the Hedgehog isn’t the only one celebrating a big moment. As of the 2016 model year, the Honda Civic began its tenth generation, reviving the compact sedan with premium interior materials, incredible handling, an excellent safety record, and great fuel efficiency. The Civic will also turn 45 years old with the 2017 model, although that’s a celebration for another day. The 2017 Civic will also mark the launch of new high-performance Civic Si models, along with the top-notch Civic Type-R, which promises to be the sportiest Civic the world has ever seen.
With the Sonic Civic, Honda is tipping its cap to a fellow long-lived Japanese cultural icon that managed to gain international recognition even as it changed its looks and its design as the years passed. However, despite all the cha
nges that took place, Sonic the Hedgehog is still just as much about going fast as he ever was. In just the same way, today’s Civic is just as much about providing comfort, reliability, and performance at a budget price as the original models made in the 1970s.
