Honda Unveils Radical Civic Type R Prototype

Honda fans have heard rumors about the performance-geared Civic Type R for a while now, but the manufacturer generated a lot of excitement when it showcased the prototype at the 2016 Paris Motor Show. Now Honda will bring the Type R prototype to the United States for the first time, with plans to show it off at the 2016 SEMA show later this year in Las Vegas.

Exterior Styling

The Honda Civic Type R will certainly turn a few heads with its sporty style and flair. It’s sleek with rounded edges and sharp lines and finishes with hatchback. At the front end, you’ll immediately notice the winged carbon fiber splitter, which sits atop the aggressive and redesigned front fascia. It also shows off an eye-catching red line through the middle, which complements the other red accents around the exterior. Larger air intakes improve performance and keep the engine cool, and those intakes are filled in with diamond mesh. Its front fascia also has extra slatted ducts that make it slightly wider.

It’s easy to spot the Type R prototype because it’s outfitted with badging. The hood has a deep air scoop, and the LED indicators, side indicator repeaters, and headlights have smoked lenses for a sporty feel.

Finished with Flair

One of the most striking aspects of the Honda Civic Type R is the finish, which is a highly reflective brushed aluminum style. It’s the only car that has this type of exterior coloring and finish, so it’s definitely going to stand out when it becomes available. The finely grained finish is smooth and sleek, adding to the aggressive feel of this hatchback.

Geared for Performance

If you’ve always wanted a Civic that is made to perform, hold out a little longer until the Type R becomes available. Right now it’s still a prototype, but Honda plans to introduce it on dealership lots in late 2017. Some of the performance features include an oversized carbon fiber diffuser that sits beneath the rear fascia, surrounding three rear tailpipes. The center tailpipe also has bright red accents. The Type R is the only model that offers vortex generators, which sit at the rear of the roof and point towards the rear wing.

The engine beneath the hood pairs with a manual six-speed transmission, giving drivers better control over the car. The majority of the modifications made to the Type R help improve the aerodynamics and make it more fun to drive.

Teams in Japan and Europe collaborated on the Civic Type R prototype, and the result is a radical and stunning car that is drawing attention from people around the world. The show in Las Vegas takes place in early November and will be the perfect stage for Honda to display this brand new vehicle, which has been in the works for a while.
