What to Look for in the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback
For those Honda fanatics who love hatchbacks but need more cargo space than the Honda Fit offers, get ready for style, comfort, and leg room! You’re soon to see something you haven’t in over a decade — a Civic Hatchback. This sleek Civic won’t roll out in North America until later this year (even before the European models), but here’s what to expect.
The Prototype
The prototype debuted at the Geneva Auto Show in early 2016. Its exterior is feisty; in fact, Honda claims its the sportiest Civic ever. From the front, the luxurious sophistication of a 10th generation Civic reigns, but the side view mimics the shape of a Crosstour, which Honda discontinued in 2015. The rear of the vehicle flaunts a modern flare where c-shaped brake lights fade into a spoiler. Two exhaust pipes segment a bumper so subtle it’s almost nonexistent, which increases its “eat my dust” appeal.
The Interior
A 7-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple Car Play compatibility comes standard in new Civics. With either of these programs, the screen becomes an extension of your phone. Play songs, receive and send messages, change events on your calendar, or enjoy podcasts or sports commentaries without taking your hands off the wheel. Even third-party apps are available, and the Honda Developer Studio is working to increase the number of compatible applications before the Civic Hatchback rolls off the assembly line.
Revving Up the 10th Generation
The new Civic Hatchback will share Honda’s first ever North American turbo engine, which currently equips only higher-end Civic sedans. Cutting two seconds off the 2016 model’s 0 to 60 run, this engine competes with last year’s SI model. The new 174-horse power turbocharged 1.5-liter engine is making waves. Although the interior of this Honda newbie has not been released, based on remarks at the New York Auto Show, this car should yield just as many upgrades as its predecessor, the 2016 Civic. That means added safety and increased cabin space is in store for the upcoming model.
What’s Ahead
Fortunately, Jeff Conrad, the VP of the Honda Automotive Division stated at the New York Auto Show that starting in fall 2016, all turbocharged Civic models, including the hatchback, will be available in a six-speed manual edition. Considering Honda’s long line of racing history, undoubtedly, Honda followers everywhere will rejoice at the stick shift option. In addition, there are rumors that a hybrid version of the hatchback could be in the making, which will allow drivers to ride in style without having to gas up as often.
No one is certain what Honda will tweak on the finalized model, but most likely the new hatchback will substantially resemble the prototype. Expect the same quality a Honda Civic always provides paired with a new sporty edge and the ability to haul more cargo or four-legged friends thanks to the addition of the fifth door. Expect the newest member of the Civic family to hit the lot at your local dealership by the end of 2016.
