2023 Honda Civic Type R Demolishes Nurburgring Track Record

The 2023 Honda Civic Type R was developed with one goal in mind: going beyond past achievements. Their goal was accomplished at Germany’s Nurburgring Nordschleife racetrack on March 24 by the newly redesigned Civic Type R. Although this isn’t the first record set by the all-new Civic Type R, it’s quite the achievement due to the sheer difficulty of the track. Wondering how the Civic Type R was able to smash the record? It’s all about determination, engineering, and pure skill.

This is the second lap record set by the 2023 Honda Civic Type R, the first being at Japan’s Suzuka racetrack. However, Nurburgring is considered to be the world’s most grueling and difficult racetrack, making this accomplishment that much more impressive. The 20.8-kilometer – or nearly 13-mile – track puts cars through the ultimate test of performance and capability. For nearly 95 years, the racetrack is a host to events, races, and even weddings. Since 1927, Nurburgring has remained one of the most legendary hosts to the most exciting vehicles around the globe. As the fastest, most powerful Honda available in the United States, the Civic Type R was up for the task.

Setting the record for front-wheel drive vehicles at 7 minutes and 44.882 seconds, the Civic Type R made use of the turbocharged engine and fine-tuned front-wheel drive. The 2.0L VTEC engine, capable of 315 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission to take on Nurburgring’s sharp corners. It doesn’t hurt that the Civic Type R was built with a highly rigid rear suspension to improve handling and take on hairpin turns, allowing the record-setting driver to stay stable at high speeds. Michelin Sport Cup 2 tires were specially fitted to the 19-inch black matte alloy wheels for an upgrade in performance. Now, in the wake of two major lap records, Honda hopes to bring the thrill of the track directly to its customers with the new Civic Type R.
