EV Charging Stations Expanding Across North America
EV owners have been waiting patiently for a massive expansion of charging stations, and thanks to automakers, it’s about to happen. Seven major producers of hybrid and electric cars, trucks, and SUVS – including the upcoming 2024 Honda Prologue – have come together to charge North America in one of the largest projects to date. As more plug-in hybrid and fully electric vehicles are released, the only way to support the surge of EV ownership is to build an infrastructure of high-powered charging stations across the country.
Fast, Sustainable Charging is on Its Way
BMW Group, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz Group, and Stellantis joined forces to take on the ambitious task of powering up North America. The goal is to install at least 30,000 high-powered charging stations across cities and highways, giving EV customers more access to charging on the go. Accessible to all electric vehicles regardless of automaker, the collaboration hopes to establish a more standardized charging system, although stations will include both the Combined Charging System and North American Charging Standard connectors. All of the charging stations will be built sustainably and use eco-friendly methods to power the chargers.
Automakers hope to begin installation of these charging stations sometime this year with completion by 2024. Plans are already in place with strategic locations in mind, namely cities, highways, and vacation destinations. Locations have been thoughtfully chosen to elevate the charging experience with placements near rest stops, bathrooms, shopping, food, and entertainment. Drivers will have the ability to find the nearest station or plan their route with in-vehicle and in-app services that integrate navigation to find the best charging times and even make reservations. Cities like Sumner will see more charging stations pop up by 2024.
Many automakers like Honda have plans for full electrification by 2030. An upgraded and expanded charging network is necessary to make EV ownership more accessible to customers across North America. Honda alone is in the works to release 30 electric vehicles, investing $38 billion to reach their goals. It’s estimated that up to 42 million electric vehicles will be on the road within the next decade, and this collaborative project is just the beginning of what’s to come.
