The New Honda Pilot TrailSport is here, and car reviewers and customers alike are raving about it. They love its usability matched with the sporty nature and the trust it gives them as a perfectly engineered Honda Autos product. 

Power & Prowess

Powered by a 3.5-liter V6 producing 285 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque and mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission, the Trailsport has 8.3 inches of ground clearance, a whole inch more than the other trim levels. An inch may not seem like a lot, but when it comes to off-roading or having to wade through high water, that inch could save you from snagging your front bumper on something or allowing water to get into your engine. 

Good In All Conditions

The Detroit Bureau, in their recent review of the TrailSport, realized that it was an all-rounder, meant for everyone:  “But at least it’s equipped for off-road action. OK, this isn’t intended for the serious boulder bashing found in Moab or on the Rubicon, but it will be capable enough once the sidewalk ends. And its ability to tackle a variety of driving conditions certainly makes this Pilot the one to get, as it sacrifices nothing in exchange for its capabilities.”

Jack Of All Trades

A major point of a good SUV is being able to do multiple things well without sacrificing other things. A car that can do one thing perfectly is typically really bad at getting groceries in. The new Honda Pilot seems to hit the high notes of being a jack of all trades, without compromising on any one thing, as, once again, The Detroit Bureau recognized: “The Honda Pilot TrailSport proves to be a fairly good, um, sport around town, with more than enough get up and go to easily deal with city, suburban and highway traffic. The steering is fairly light, however, which along with a relatively high ride height for Honda doesn’t exactly provoke you to drive this Honda with any real gusto. Body roll is well-controlled, as are unwanted ride motions, while the ride proves to be fairly comfy. But then again, you’re not exactly driving this like a Civic Si.”

While it may not be a Honda Civic Si, the TrailSport needs to be able to tick most boxes for all of the drivers in a household, and obviously, it seems to do a lot of things well. Which is the mark of a great vehicle, doing everything well instead of one thing perfectly. 

Three Rows For Adults

One box that definitely needs to be ticked for a 3-row SUV is comfort for every seat, and oftentimes adults do not fit in the third row well as they’re meant for kids. However, the Honda Pilot TrailSport surprised Larry Printz of The Detroit Bureau: “Unexpectedly, all rows are habitable by adults, even the third row, surprisingly enough. But the driver’s position is particularly good, and features a left foot dead pedal, which is always appreciated. That said, it does live up to its familial DNA as Hondas have always been noisy, and the Pilot TrailSport seems to be no exception, particularly with its all-terrain tires.

MSRP, MPG, & Safety

The Honda Pilot TrailSport starts at $48,700 and achieves an EPA-rated 18 mpg city and 23 mpg highway, respectively. The Honda Pilot as a whole is an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick+.
