Safe Driving Tips for the Fall
Fall, as wonderful as it is, has a notable reputation for throwing a few monkey wrenches into the act of taking a drive. As the days get shorter and the temps get colder, this season presents a few hazards that drivers need to watch out for. Take a look at these safe driving tips for the fall as you prepare for the new season.

How to Stay Safe When Driving in the Fall
There may be more things to consider than what we have, but these are the most important and easiest to adapt to.
- Beware of colder temperatures even before you start the engine. Temperature changes that we see in the fall can cause a car’s tire pressure to change or, in more extreme cases, cause certain automobile components to freeze up. Stay on top of your routine maintenance so your car is ready for the road.
- Be mindful of the shorter days and longer nights. The sun won’t be out as long, and it’ll also be at different angles than you might be used to from the summer on your morning and evening commutes. Remember to turn your headlights on as the sun sets, and be careful not to let the sun blind you as you drive.
- Watch out for kids and school buses. School’s back in session! The morning and afternoon roads will likely be busier now, so pay attention to the additional activity and be extra prepared to brake suddenly if a bus stops or kids run out into the road.
- Look out for animals. This is especially important in areas with a lot of wilderness like we have here in Washington. This is mating season for deer, so this is a particularly dangerous time of year to encounter them as they travel. Always be aware of your peripherals for possible animals running into the road.
- Be careful of slippery leaves. When fall is in full swing, the freshly fallen leaves will decorate roads and sidewalks. If they haven’t been disposed of or blown away, they could gather on the road and make for a slicker drive, especially if it’s been raining.
